About the Item
The geographical region of Northwest Persia with its’ cities and villages was at the forefront of the large-scale export of rugs and carpets in the late 19th century. The merchants of Tabriz, a large city that is the capital of Persian Azerbaijan, are credited with the successful promotion of the carpet industry to the west. Many of the smaller villages in this area produced weavings with distinct characteristics. The town of Serab primarily produced runners utilizing a camel-colored field. This color was obtained by dyeing sheep’s wool with walnut husks. The construction often has a single weft thread passing between each row of knots, with older examples utilizing wool for the foundation threads. The patterns can vary, but many traditional examples have repeat patterns of hexagonal pole medallions. This unique example has an overall pattern of polychrome rosettes in a diamond lattice within a reciprocal trefoil border. 13' 10" x 3' 9"
