About the Item
Kashan carpets, produced in central Persia, are known for having a distinctly soft, refined, and flowing curvilinear style in their patterns. Most examples have large central medallions and corner spandrels. Earlier examples from this weaving center utilize Manchester wool, derived from a specific type of sheep variety called Merino sheep originating from Australia. The processing into yarn used in weaving such rugs was done in Manchester, England, and ultimately exported to Persia/Iran for weaving. During the great depression, many foreign entities defaulted on their loans in Persia, and at that time, the Shah nationalized the wool industry. Therefore, all Kashans woven in the 1930s and later had wool produced in Persia. This example has a central polychrome pendant medallion on an ivory field flanked by complementary spandrels within an indigo palmette and curled-leaf border. 6' 8" x 4' 2".
