Large Light Blue Persian Kerman Rug 48869, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Persian Rugs, Circa Date: 1920 – Size: 10 ft 6 in x 19 ft (3.2 m x 5.79 m) The weavers of Kerman have been producing some of the finest carpets in the world for nearly 400 years. This carpet weaving center, located in central Persia, once produced the fine court carpets of the Safavid Dynasty. They remained a center for weaving fine carpets for many centuries. This spectacular piece reflects the refinement and skill for which Kerman weavers were known. It was created around 1920, which represents a time of transition in Kerman carpet design when carpets were being produced with a European market in mind. In the early 19th century, the city of Kerman was burned. This forced many of the weavers to move to nearby Lavar, where they took up their craft at a new location. The Kerman weavers continued to create carpets that rivaled those produced during the Golden Age of the Safavid Dynasty. They are known for their fine weave and delicate designs, as this piece demonstrates. The carpets show a high level of artistic development in both the artistry and colors. Kerman carpets use high-quality wool and sometimes, lamb’s wool, which gives them a lustrous sheen and especially soft texture. This gorgeous piece has beautiful ivory, browns, and blue background that would make an excellent complement to a neutral room. It adds a touch of color in a way that is delicate and gentle. The design is based on a central medallion that is only indicated by the graceful meeting of two cloud bands.
