Exceeding the humble village designs and dimensions that Malayer rugs are prized for, this antique room-sized Persian carpet displays a remarkably sophisticated all-over repeating pattern rendered in a refined selection of neutral tones that combine flamboyance and finesse. The steely gunmetal ground is adorned with a dazzling pattern of repeating palmettes, arching vines and botanical flourishes that display kaleidoscopic symmetry. This chic, ultra-refined repeating pattern is framed by richly detailed borders that rival Persia’s best city carpets. These dimensional neutral-tone borders are filled with flaming palmettes and beautiful ash-tipped calyces that are arranged in a dazzling reciprocating pattern. This exceedingly beautiful example of curvilinear designs from the Hamadan region combines richly decorative motifs with superfluous features that are tempered by the elegant, uncharacteristically soft colors.
