About the Item

This extraordinary Antique Persian Heriz / Serapi carpet, measuring an impressive 12 × 19'3" feet and woven circa 1900, represents the pinnacle of northwest Persian village weaving. Monumental in scale and presence, the carpet remains in exceptional, near-mint condition and was sourced directly from a historic private estate on Philadelphia’s Main Line, where it resided for generations in a grand stone manor of the early American Country House tradition. Developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Philadelphia Main Line became home to America’s most prominent families—industrialists, financiers, and patrons of the arts—who commissioned estates inspired by European castles and English country homes. Constructed of hand-cut stone with leaded glass windows, vaulted interiors, and formal entertaining spaces, these residences were designed to showcase Old World furnishings of scale and distinction. This Heriz / Serapi carpet originally anchored one such grand interior, where its bold geometry, saturated natural dyes, and commanding size were ideally suited to the architecture. Its outstanding condition today reflects both the durability of its construction and the careful stewardship of its owners. The carpet displays the defining characteristics of classic Serapi-type Heriz weaving: a powerful, architectural central medallion set within a richly saturated brick-red field, framed by angular spandrels and a deeply drawn navy floral border. The drawing is confident and spacious, with a clarity and balance associated with the finest late 19th-century production. 1. Hand-knotted wool pile on cotton foundation. 2. Thick, resilient wool with luminous vegetable dyes. 3. Bold, geometric articulation typical of early Serapi carpets. 4. Remarkable pile and crisp detail for its age. Carpets of this size were woven in limited numbers and intended for palatial rooms, making surviving examples—especially in this condition—exceptionally rare. A circa-1900 Heriz / Serapi carpet of this scale, condition, and estate provenance is seldom encountered. It is not merely decorative, but architectural and historical, created for grand interiors and capable of anchoring the finest rooms today. This is a museum-worthy Heriz / Serapi, offering timeless design, exceptional craftsmanship, and a provenance that connects Persian weaving heritage with America’s Golden Age of estate building.
