About the Item
This rug is handmade in Serapi area located northwest of Iran. Heriz/Serapi carpets are woven on both a workshop and a cottage industry basis in hundreds of villages throughout the area. Designs have remained unchanged for thousands of years: a huge cruciform medallion surrounded by simple, angular vines and spandrels within a samovar border.
This Serapi, however has some special features that have not been seen in other Heriz/Serapi carpets, namely the maroon outline around the medallion. Also notice the four corners of the rug have two different colors rather than one. There are expert restorations performed on this carpet and it is otherwise in very good condition.
