A turn of the 20th century Persian Sultanabad carpet. Sultanabad rugs are distinguished as the highest quality Mahal carpets. It is often called a Ziegler Mahal because of the western influenced production of these rugs in Persia by the Manchester, England–based Anglo-Swiss firm of Ziegler
Co.
The palette of rusts, greens, and blues recalls the great carpets woven in Isfahan and Herat in the 16th century. This extraordinary antique Zeigler combines grand size and scale with exquisite drawing and detail. The subtle hued field offers a delicate backdrop for the finely woven vivid floral details that meander gracefully over the ground.
