19th Century Persian Shahsavan Soumak Nomadic Double Saddlebag
Located in Barrington, IL
This rare 19th century Persian Shahsavan soumak double saddlebag is a striking example of nomadic craftsmanship from northwestern Iran. Handwoven by Shahsavan tribal weavers, the piece features finely detailed geometric star and small medallion motifs, rendered in a vibrant yet balanced palette of green, yellow, ivory, and rich red. The bag faces are executed in a sophisticated soumak flatweave technique, prized for its texture, durability, and visual depth. The reverse reveals a beautifully preserved kilim-woven backing with traditional striped patterning in rust red, warm brown, and golden yellow, underscoring the utilitarian origins of the piece. Originally created as a functional storage and transport item for nomadic life, Shahsavan saddlebags were used to carry personal belongings across seasonal migrations. Today, more than a century later, these textiles are celebrated as collectible tribal art, ideally suited for display as tapestry wall art, draped over furniture, or incorporated into curated interior design schemes.
