About the Item

Handwoven in the 1940s by Bakhtiari tribal weavers of northwest Persia, this striking Khorjin (saddle bag) rug exemplifies the region’s masterful use of mixed techniques—flatweave, pile, and soumak—within a single piece. Originally created to adorn pack animals, it combines function with artistry, yielding a rare three-dimensional texture. This example features a deeply saturated palette of crimson, indigo, orange, and ivory with graphic tribal medallions and striped ends that balance geometry with rhythm. The piece has since been flattened and converted into a small runner rug, ideal for adding a layer of cultural depth to modern interiors while preserving its nomadic heritage. Size: 2'8" x 6'2" (approx. 3'x6') Thickness: Varies (0.2" – 0.4") due to mixed weave Technique: Flat-woven + Pile + Soumak Material: Handspun wool (naturally dyed with roots plants) on a wool foundation. Colors: Crimson red, midnight indigo, ivory, burnt orange, sage green, steel blue Origin: Northwest Persia Circa: 1940s Condition: Excellent vintage condition — light age patina, no repairs, professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use. WHERE IT SHINES ✨ • A statement runner that instantly adds history and depth to minimalist spaces • Gorgeous layered over sisal or hardwood floors for a collected, global look • The mix of pile, kilim, and soumak textures creates movement and dimension underfoot • Equally stunning hung as wall art — a conversation piece that feels both ancient and modern
