About the Item

This antique Persian Malayer runner originates from western Iran and dates to the late 19th century, circa 1870–1890. Measuring approximately 2 ft 10 in x 9 ft 6 in (about 86 x 290 cm), it is a classic long, narrow runner format well suited to transitional spaces. Hand-knotted using traditional techniques, the rug features a wool pile over a cotton foundation, reflecting Malayer’s village-based weaving heritage. Its proportions, weight, and materials place it firmly in the antique runner category, prized for both authenticity and functional versatility. The design is an allover composition built from small-scale geometric and stylized floral motifs arranged in a dense, continuous rhythm. Repeating rosettes, hooked polygons, and lattice-like forms animate the field, while subtle arched spandrel shapes at the ends reference a pseudo-prayer layout without a directional focus. A single wide main border, edged by narrow guards, frames the field with meandering and geometric accents. The palette centers on warm beige and wheat tones, enriched by taupe, camel, and olive-brown details, with the border reading slightly darker than the field for gentle visual definition. Woven with asymmetrical Persian knots at a moderate density, the rug has a low-to-medium pile height of roughly 4 mm, producing a firm yet pliable handle. The structure feels stable and well-balanced, with cotton warps and wefts providing strength and dimensional integrity. This construction supports everyday foot traffic typical of hallways and corridors while maintaining the tactile refinement expected of an antique piece. For designers, this Malayer runner offers exceptional flexibility. Its neutral, earthy palette integrates easily into traditional, rustic, and understated contemporary interiors, complementing wood floors, stone, and muted textiles. The elongated scale works especially well in hallways, entryways, bedrooms, libraries, or home offices, adding pattern and warmth without overwhelming the space. As an authentic 19th-century village rug, it also carries strong long-term value retention for curated residential or boutique hospitality projects. Condition is best described as very good to excellent for its age. The wool pile shows even wear consistent with antique use, with no visible stains, repairs, or moth damage noted. The structure remains sound, with intact selvedges and neatly finished ends. Minor off-squareness and gentle tonal variation are present, typical of handmade antique rugs and not considered flaws. Professional, low-moisture cleaning and a suitable pad are recommended to preserve the fibers and foundation over time.
