About the Item
Technical Overview
This antique Persian Yazd rug dates to the mid-20th century, circa 1930–1950, and originates from the city of Yazd in central Iran, a region celebrated for finely knotted workshop carpets with balanced, repeat-driven designs. Woven in a standard large rectangular format, it measures approximately 8 ft 5 in x 11 ft 7 in (about 257 x 353 cm), making it well suited for larger residential rooms. The rug is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and remains a one-of-a-kind example with a refined, decorative character.
Design Analysis
The design features a dense allover field of repeating boteh (paisley) motifs, interlaced with delicate floral and vine infill, and arranged in a non-directional, symmetrical pattern. There is no central medallion; visual interest comes from the continuous rhythm of the field. Multiple borders frame the composition, anchored by a wide main border with floral motifs and flanked by narrower guard borders. The color palette is anchored by a warm butter-cream beige ground, enriched with brick red and reddish-brown botehs, slate blue accents, pale ivory highlights, and dark brown outlining. Field and border share a similar ground tone, with stronger accent colors in the borders creating gentle contrast rather than sharp separation.
Weave and Performance
Knotted with asymmetrical Persian knots at a fine density of approximately 200–350 KPSI, the rug shows precise workshop execution and strong structural integrity. The pile height of about 5 mm creates a smooth, resilient surface with moderate sheen and a balanced hand. A woven cotton foundation enhances stability, making the rug appropriate for low to moderate traffic areas such as formal living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and studies.
Professional Application
This Yazd rug works especially well in traditional, transitional, and classically layered interiors that favor light grounds with controlled pattern density. Its large scale comfortably anchors dining tables or full seating groups, while the warm beige palette pairs easily with wood, stone, and neutral upholstery. With solid prestige and value retention, it supports both decorative and long-term design strategies.
Condition
Care
The rug is in excellent antique condition, with even wear consistent with age and no visible repairs, stains, odor, or moth damage. Fringes, selvedges, and ends appear original, intact, and well preserved. Professional cleaning is recommended, with dye testing before wet cleaning and avoidance of strong alkaline solutions, consistent with 1stDibs standards for fine antique rugs.
