About the Item

This antique Persian Malayer rug dates to approximately 1870–1890 and represents a classic example of late 19th-century village weaving from western Iran. Woven in a standard large rectangular format, it measures approximately 6 ft 9 in x 10 ft 2 in (about 206 x 310 cm). The rug is hand knotted with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, reflecting the durable yet refined construction associated with Malayer production. Its age places it firmly in the antique category, valued for both craftsmanship and historical character. The design features a dense allover composition with no central medallion, built from a rhythmic field of geometric floral and abstract tribal motifs. Stylized palmettes, rosettes, cartouche-like forms, and angular vine elements interlock across a dark brown sugar field. This is framed by multiple borders, including a wide main border and narrower guard borders, rendered on a lighter eggshell ground. The color relationship emphasizes contrast, with the pale border crisply outlining the darker interior while muted accents of camel, sienna, and soft blue add depth without disrupting the earthy balance. Hand knotted using asymmetrical Persian knots at an estimated 100–150 KPSI, the rug has a medium pile height of approximately 4 mm. The handle is moderately pliable with a stable woven backing and no applied adhesives. This structure supports good durability for an antique textile, making it suitable for regular use in controlled, lower-traffic environments. From a professional design perspective, this Malayer rug works well in living rooms, libraries, studies, formal dining rooms, and low-traffic bedrooms. Its neutral brown and beige palette integrates seamlessly with traditional, rustic, and layered eclectic interiors, while the large scale pattern reads clearly in medium to large rooms. As a high-rarity antique with strong regional identity, it also offers solid long-term value retention. Condition is best described as excellent for an antique rug. The pile is evenly worn and stable, with no visible repairs, stains, moth damage, or odor. Colors remain well preserved with only mild, period-consistent abrash. Edges and ends are secure, and the structure is sound, meeting 1stDibs expectations for a well-preserved antique textile.
