About the Item
This antique Persian runner from the Azerbaijan region, dating to approximately 1870–1890, is a finely preserved example of 19th-century tribal weaving. Hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation, it measures approximately 3 ft 5 in x 10 ft 0 in (1.04 × 3.05 m), making it a classic corridor runner well suited to hallways, stair landings, galleries, and transitional spaces. Its low-to-medium pile and balanced weight reflect a utilitarian yet expressive weaving tradition intended for daily use.
The design is organized around a repeating stepped-medallion layout, aligned along a strong vertical axis that gives the runner a clear sense of direction. Large linked geometric medallions anchor the field, interspersed with latch-hook motifs, arrow forms, cruciform elements, and small rosettes. The border consists of a single main band with narrow guard stripes, framing the composition without overwhelming it. The palette is warm and earthy—saddle brown and olive-beige dominate, accented by muted green, dusty blue, espresso brown, and occasional rose highlights. Noticeable abrash along the length adds visual movement and reinforces its handmade character.
Structurally, the rug is hand-knotted at an estimated 100–150 KPSI, producing clear geometric articulation with a practical pile height of about 5 mm. Wool fibers provide natural durability, resilience, and moth resistance, while the woven foundation keeps the runner flexible yet stable. This construction performs especially well in linear spaces with moderate foot traffic when paired with a felt or felt-rubber pad for cushioning and grip.
From a design perspective, this runner offers a strong tribal anchor for interiors that benefit from pattern and warmth. It pairs naturally with wood floors, stone, and neutral walls, and works across rustic, eclectic, and collected traditional schemes. The elongated proportions visually guide movement through a space without overpowering it.
Condition is consistent with a well-kept antique. The rug carries a Wear Grade A rating, with no noted repairs, stains, odors, or moth damage. Selvedges are intact and ends are cleanly finished with woven terminations and no projecting fringe. Professional cleaning with dye testing is recommended, avoiding aggressive or high-alkaline treatments to preserve the natural dyes.
