About the Item
An early 20th-century Persian Baluch rug, handwoven in a rich, earthy palette of brown, orange, faded crimson, black, and white wool. The field is anchored by four large stylized diamond medallions, each boldly geometric and softened by wear, set amidst a dense ground of smaller floral motifs and repeated triangular checkerboard elements. The visual rhythm is tight and intricate, with slight asymmetries that speak to the hand of the weaver. The border is especially striking—a complex arrangement of stylized flowers and geometric repeats, layered with nuance and movement.
Baluch rugs are traditionally woven by semi-nomadic Baluchi tribes in the border regions of eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and southern Turkmenistan. Known for their smaller scale, deep color, and richly detailed designs, Baluch rugs were most often woven by women on portable looms. This example reflects that legacy—personal, meticulous, and full of depth—made not for export, but for use and lasting beauty.
