About the Item

78163 Vintage Persian Sarouk Rug, 09'04 x 12'03. Woven in the heart of Persia’s storied weaving tradition, this hand-knotted wool vintage Sarouk rug embodies the height of refinement and classical beauty. Its allover floral composition — an extraordinary tableau of tulips, palmettes, peonies, lotus blossoms, and delicate vine scrolls — unfurls across an ivory field like a garden in perpetual bloom. The artistry lies not only in its density of pattern but in its balance: each floral motif rendered with lyrical precision, each vine meandering with graceful intention. The result is an exceptional work of art that feels alive — a living manuscript of Persian artistry, rooted in heritage and whispered luxury. The sumptuous palette, anchored in soft ivory and enriched with shades of carmine red, indigo, rose, and pistachio, reflects the sophisticated sensibility for which Sarouk rugs are celebrated. These hues, harmoniously blended, speak of prestige and permanence — colors once favored in the grand salons and private estates of the early 20th century. Every bloom and tendril within the exclusive design seems to float effortlessly, reflecting a mastery of proportion and the subtle tension between structure and spontaneity that defines true Persian elegance. Encircling the field is a magnificent floral border — a stately frame composed of stylized rosettes, scrolling palmettes, and split-leaf arabesques. It is flanked by inner and outer carnation meander guard bands, each winding like a poetic refrain, adding rhythm and refinement to the composition. This architectural framing not only heightens the sense of order but underscores the grandeur of the design, evoking the lush walled gardens of Isfahan and the ornamental courtyards of royal Persian palaces. For the collector or aesthete who appreciates the nuance of woven art, this exquisite masterpiece offers more than craftsmanship — it offers legacy. Its beauty is both decorative and cultural, its elegance timeless yet personal. Whether gracing a Parisian salon, a Manhattan penthouse, or a heritage home, this vintage Sarouk rug speaks a language of cultivated taste and enduring distinction — the language of those who know that true luxury is not loud, but lasting. Rendered in variegated shades of ivory, red, beige, pink, sky blue, light green, cerise, navy blue, black, tan, blue, raspberry red, rose, mint, orange and baby blue with other accent colors. Abrash. Hand knotted wool. Made in Iran. Measures: 09'04 x 12'03. Pile Height: 0.35 of an inch. Date: 1940s. Mid-20th Century.

Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug

Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
