This antique Persian Malayer gallery runner, woven circa 1870–1890, measures approximately 3 ft x 20 ft (about 5.72 sq m) and belongs to the Gallery Runner size class ideal for long halls and transition spaces. Hand-knotted with an asymmetric (Persian) knot on a cotton foundation and finished with a wool pile, it reflects the fine rural craftsmanship characteristic of Malayer village production in the late nineteenth century. Medium-light in weight and built on a durable woven foundation, the runner presents as a collectible yet practical antique textile.
The design centers on a single elongated pole-medallion system with a diamond medallion at its axis, flanked by pointed spandrels that create a directional visual flow. A deep navy field contrasts sharply with rust red motifs, ivory highlights, and earth-tone accents, contributing to a high-contrast palette that reads both graphic and warm. Repeating stylized rosettes, boteh-like leaves, hooked polygons, and angular vine elements fill the field with rhythmic density, while multiple borders—one wide main band framed by narrow guards—anchor the composition with geometric clarity.
The structure features 100–150 KPSI knot density, a medium wool pile around 5 mm, and a handle that is moderately flexible yet firm enough for long-term corridor use. The woven foundation, secure selvedges, and strong pile condition support the rug’s functional suitability for hallways, entries, galleries, and formal circulation zones, provided shoe traffic is moderated in respect to its antique age.
For designers, this piece brings a deep navy and rust classicism that complements traditional millwork, vintage wood floors, and richly layered interiors. Its elongated scale naturally enhances long architectural axes, guiding sightlines and adding historic refinement to transitional spaces.
