This 10x20 fragment rug is a rare antique Persian rug of Isfahan provenance, hand-knotted in wool and believed to originate in the mid 17th century. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will note what a special find an oversized Isfahan rug is among the Persian rug provenances known for such works—let alone from this period and in this astounding quality. In this piece, a rich burgundy red field and teal blue border underscore floral patterns in the all over style. Keen eyes will further admire especially present gold tones, as well as the other subtle details in color and drawing that make this such a masterpiece for its large size and scale. Admirers of the craft will further note this piece is an exemplar of its period—particularly the shade of red many in our craft associate with the most celebrated rugs of its time. So, too, will students of history note that this is one of the most finely woven Isfahani rugs we've seen, and rarely do we see such a fine weave in this kind of pattern—one of many signs of a more deliberate, personal piece, most likely made as an aristocratic commission or gift for a court. All in all it’s a regal and extremely collectible piece in all of its beauties, full of archaic, old-world charm worthy of the most special projects and collectors alike. Condition: This oversized antique Persian rug fragment features some areas of distress consistent with its age and origin, as well as some repairs visible in field and border patches alike.
