Hand-knotted in wool circa 1910-1920, this 14x19 oversized rug is a rare antique Persian rug of Tabriz provenance and the latest addition to Rug
Kilim’s coveted Antique collection.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will appreciate Tabriz carpets among some of the most sought-after Persian weaving traditions—particularly for their mansion-size rugs of such clear aristocratic commission, and the impressive level of intricacy and quality that still adorns every inch of even a large work like this piece. This Tabriz rug features a field of cream and beige tones, and vibrant rust and orange borders underscoring dense floral patterns in particularly warm hues like gold, beige-brown and hints of cream. Keen eyes will further note what resembles an interesting play of both geometry and florals on the vines of the field—an intricate variation of the Herati (or “fish”) pattern with unexpected and whimsical supplements to the rich colors beneath. Overall the attention to detail in its gracious scale, texture, and movement of color is matched only by its equally rare condition. This is an exemplary traditional piece, with more liveliness than many found among Persian city rugs and Oriental rugs alike in the modern day.
