About the Item

PERSIAN ANTIQUE BIJAR (BIDJAR) RUNNER RUG Western Persia, circa 1920 Item # 404KJT12P A rich and timeless Persian Bijar runner rug, this carpet features a chaotic ground spilling over with densely packed motifs that move and shift from one form into the next in their endless geometrical dance. The ground is a deep navy blue with lighter hues where dye changes occurred during weaving, while the foreground of the primary is an endless array of blue, teal, brick red, ruby red, yellow, ochre, pink, green, orange and many shades in between. It is surrounded by a bold yellow monochromatic border, an inner white border with a repeating vine-and-flower motif that is a reduction of the outer border of the same motif. The primary outer band is grounded in a brilliant ruby red with an array of biomorphic motif representing gardens with floral and tree life. Called the "Iron Rug" for good reason, the Persian Bijar (or Bidjar) rug is built to last the test of time. The present example is beautifully composed and is rendered in a brilliant high-chroma pallette with curious shapes and objects throughout. Over one-hundred years of gentle use and careful wear has resulted in a surface that is soft and supple to the touch, color that is mellow and pleasing to the eye and only subtle hints of its aged history. It is such a classic statement piece for the interior and if well cared for it will continue to outlast us to future generations. Measurements: 111 3/4" L x 54 1/2" W Condition Report: Selvedge cords rebound. Two tears to the borders restored with stitched and woven repairs. A few re-woven hole restorations. Minor punctures and age-appropriate stretching. Structure visibility throughout with uneven wear to the pile. Carpet is in estate-found condition and has only been lightly cleaned in-house - we always recommend taking our rugs to a professional cleaner for a more indepth cleaning at some point.
