About the Item

Technical Overview This antique Persian Bakhtiar small rug dates to the late 19th century, circa 1870–1890, and originates from the Bakhtiar tribal weaving regions of western Iran, known for robust construction and richly patterned village carpets. Woven in a standard small rectangular format, it measures approximately 4 ft 6 in x 6 ft 9 in (about 137 x 206 cm), making it well suited for intimate interior settings. The rug is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and is a one-of-a-kind example with strong tribal character and enduring material integrity. Design Analysis The design features an allover compartmental layout formed by a dense hexagonal lattice, each compartment filled with geometric floral rosettes, small boteh-like sprigs, crosses, and starburst motifs. There is no dominant central medallion; instead, visual balance is achieved through highly regular repetition and bilateral symmetry. A single wide main border, flanked by narrow inner and outer guard stripes, frames the field and reinforces the geometric structure. The palette is anchored by a burnt terracotta-orange field, contrasted with dark navy blue elements and softened by parchment beige, ivory, rust brown, and occasional green accents. Noticeable abrash across the reds and blues adds depth and authentic age variation. Weave and Performance Knotted with symmetrical (Turkish) knots at an estimated density of 100–150 KPSI, the rug offers a durable, resilient structure typical of Bakhtiar tribal weaving. The medium-low pile height of approximately 4 mm provides a firm underfoot feel with subdued sheen and a compact handle. A woven cotton foundation and intact selvedges support continued use, making the rug appropriate for light to moderate traffic areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, studies, and formal sitting rooms. Professional Application This Bakhtiar rug works especially well in traditional, eclectic, and collected interiors where strong pattern and warm color create a focal point. Its small scale makes it ideal for anchoring seating vignettes, placing beside a bed, or defining a study or library area. High rarity and prestige support its use in curated interiors where decorative impact and long-term value are both priorities. Condition Care The rug is in excellent antique condition, with even wear consistent with age and no visible repairs, stains, odor, or moth damage. Fringes, selvedges, and ends appear original and intact, showing only minor wear typical of handwoven antiques. Professional cleaning is recommended, with caution around strong alkaline agents and prolonged wetting, in keeping with 1stDibs standards for fine antique rugs.
