This antique Persian Mashad rug was hand-knotted in northeastern Iran between 1900 and 1920, a period known for robust workshop production and richly saturated palettes. Woven entirely in wool on a cotton foundation, it measures approximately 8 ft 3 in x 11 ft 0 in (about 2.51 x 3.35 meters), placing it in a standard large, room-size format. The medium pile and substantial weight reflect its intended use as a durable yet refined furnishing for formal interiors.
The design centers on a large, multi-lobed floral medallion set within a deep ruby red field, framed by coordinated corner spandrels. Dense curvilinear ornament fills the ground, including palmettes, rosettes, serrated leaves, and Shah Abbas–style arabesques. A contrasting navy main border anchors the composition, layered with multiple guard stripes and repeating floral motifs that create a strong visual frame. Ivory, antique gold, teal, and soft green accents articulate the pattern and add depth against the red and navy grounds.
Constructed with an asymmetric Persian knot at a moderately fine density, the rug has a supple handle with a pile height of approximately 6 mm. The woven cotton foundation provides structural stability, while the wool pile offers resilience and soil-hiding performance.
