This antique Persian Bijar rug (RUG-ID 72366), hand-knotted in wool on a sturdy cotton foundation, dates from the early 20th century (circa 1900–1920). Its versatile standard medium format measures approximately 6 ft 9 in x 9 ft 6 in (about 5.96 m²), making it well-proportioned for living rooms, dining rooms, libraries, bedrooms, and elegant entry halls. Known for exceptional craftsmanship, Bijar rugs are prized for their compressed wool construction, resilience, and high-end collectible appeal.
The design features a central diamond medallion with pendants set within a subtly niche-shaped field containing a dense Herati lattice, while intricate borders create a richly layered frame. A warm rust red and maroon palette dominates the composition, accented by deep teal, golden ochre, and pale sand details that emphasize floral motifs, boteh elements, and small rosettes. Fine dual-axis symmetry and detailed curvilinear drawing convey a refined, traditional aesthetic with lasting visual interest.
Expertly executed Persian knotting at 200–300 KPSI, a 6 mm medium pile, and a firm deep warp depression foundation produce the legendary “iron rug” durability associated with Bijar weaving. The dense wool pile offers long-term performance under supervised household use, and its darker, pattern-rich field helps conceal everyday wear.
