About the Item

This antique Persian Sultanabad palace rug was woven circa 1870–1890 and exemplifies the grand-scale production associated with the Sultanabad region during the late 19th century. Measuring approximately 11 ft 0 in x 13 ft 8 in (about 13.97 sq m), it falls into the Palace / Oversize size class. The rug is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, using a symmetrical (Turkish) knot, and features a medium pile suited to formal interiors requiring both presence and longevity. The design presents a dense allover pattern with no central medallion, allowing the field to read continuous and expansive. Floral palmettes, stylized rosettes, vinery, leafy tendrils, and abstract shrub forms repeat rhythmically across a burnt terracotta-red ground. The border system consists of a wide primary border flanked by multiple guard borders, rendered on a lighter ivory-beige ground that contrasts clearly against the darker field. Accents of dusty blue, golden ochre, and charcoal add depth and visual articulation, while mild abrash introduces subtle tonal movement. Structurally, the rug shows a 100–150 KPSI knot density with two weft shots and moderate warp depression, producing a stable, resilient weave. The wool pile measures approximately 6 mm, offering a balanced combination of durability and comfort. With a weight class appropriate for large-format rugs, it performs well in formal living rooms, dining rooms, libraries, and large foyers with light to moderate traffic. From a design perspective, the warm terracotta palette pairs naturally with traditional, transitional, and collected interiors, complementing wood furnishings, antique finishes, and neutral architectural backdrops. Its non-directional allover layout allows flexible placement and supports strong long-term decorative value typical of Sultanabad palace rugs. Condition is rated excellent for an antique, with no visible repairs, staining, moth damage, or odor. Selvedges are intact, structure is sound, and pile wear is consistent with age. Care should include dye testing before wet cleaning and the use of a quality pad to support preservation.
