About the Item
This antique Persian Bakhtiar rug dates to approximately 1870–1890 and represents a classic room-size format with strong architectural presence. Measuring approximately 10 ft 7 in x 12 ft 1 in (about 3.23 x 3.68 meters), it offers a generous footprint suited to formal interiors. Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, the rug features a medium pile and a substantial yet refined handle. As a one-of-a-kind antique, it reflects both regional craftsmanship and long-term material resilience typical of Bakhtiar production.
The design centers on a large, multi-lobed floral star medallion with pendant extensions, framed by quarter medallions in the corners. The field is organized yet visually rich, with dense ornamentation around the medallion transitioning to a calmer rust ground beyond. Multiple borders surround the field, anchored by a wide main border with scrolling vines, palmettes, rosettes, and serrated leaves, flanked by narrow guard stripes. The palette is dominated by warm rust and terracotta tones, contrasted by deep navy spandrels and highlighted with antique parchment and golden ochre accents, producing a balanced but vibrant visual rhythm.
Structurally, the rug is woven with asymmetric Persian knots at an estimated 150–250 KPSI, giving it clarity of drawing and durability. The pile height is approximately 6 mm, with a mid-pile density that supports longevity while maintaining surface detail. Warp and weft are cotton, with moderate warp depression and multiple weft shots, resulting in a stable, flexible foundation suitable for sustained use in controlled traffic environments.
For professional interiors, this Bakhtiar rug functions as a strong anchor piece in formal living rooms, dining rooms with light to moderate use, libraries, or executive offices. Its classic proportions and central medallion layout work particularly well beneath large seating groups or dining tables, while the warm rust ground complements traditional, transitional, and heritage-inspired palettes. As an antique with high rarity and value-retention potential, it also supports collector-driven or investment-minded design projects.
Condition is very good for an antique example. Wear is consistent with age, with no visible stains, color run, or moth damage noted. The rug is off-square, as expected in handwoven antiques, but remains structurally sound. Selvedges and ends are intact, with original fringes present and neatly trimmed. No repairs are recorded, and the wool pile retains good resilience. Standard professional wet cleaning is appropriate, with care taken to test reds and navies for dye stability and to avoid aggressive alkaline agents.
