Kilim’s curation of rare tribal pieces. Hand-knotted in wool circa 1950-1960.
On the Design:
This bold and minimalist mid-century Gabbeh rug embraces tribal design aesthetics through geometry and stark color contrasts. At its heart, three prominent diamond medallions, two in black and one in deep red, anchor the composition with symmetrical balance. These striking shapes are set against a softly striated background in muted earth tones, ranging from beige to sandy brown. The diamonds, each edged with jagged stair-step borders in red and beige, echo the signature zigzag motifs found in nomadic weavings, symbolizing protection. Framing the central tableau is a vivid checkerboard border in alternating bright red and olive green tones, lending the rug a rhythmic energy that draws the eye inward.
