About the Item

Saraband rugs are from the Ser-e Band district, located southwest of Arak, in west-central Persia. These 19th- and early 20th-century rugs, noted for their sturdiness and unobtrusive charm, have a characteristic pattern known commercially as the Mīr design consisting of small, complex pear (boteh) or leaf forms in diagonal rows. A geometric vine with similar leaf forms usually occupies the principal border stripe. There may be geometric corner pieces or perhaps a small, similarly geometric central medallion. Dark blue and ivory are used as ground colors, as well as the usual Saraband or tomato-red. The knotting is symmetrical, on a cotton foundation. Most of the larger examples are in gallery formats, being long and narrow rather than of room dimension. This example is in a standard small size of 7' 0" x 4' 4".
