About the Item
8'5 x 11'. This highly decorative Tabriz carpet from northwest Persia juxtaposes a mid-blue field (with just a touch of green) with a beige border. The all-over field pattern of palmettes is derived from 17th century Kerman “Vase” carpets and indeed there are highly stylized vases in the five vertical design axes. The palmettes, in numerous distinct styles, along with rosettes, small lancet curved leaves and buds and other floriated devices, are connected by a dominant trellis and two secondary vinery systems. The in-and-out palmettes border and related minor stripes gives a thematic integration to the whole. The colors are restrained and mellow, without being overly subdued. The drawing and execution are precise as is the case with all Tabriz carpets of quality. The border functions as a frame laid over an infinite, continuous repeating textile pattern. The carpet is traditionally formal in the Persian manner. The tonality and all-over pattern are precisely in tune with prevailing decorative trends emphasizing rich, fully detailed interiors. This carpet, of medium Fine weave on a cotton foundation, is an attractive unifier to a room in English, Continental or American style without too strongly asserting itself as the cynosure of all eyes.
