About the Item
This is a Caucasian Soumak (Sumak) flatweave, likely from the Azerbaijan / Shirvan / Kuba region. The design, weave structure, and colors match 20th-century Soumak workshop pieces, not the older tribal antique ones from the early 20th century and late 19th century. size is 3'2'' x 4'5''
Estimated Age: 40–60 years old (circa 1960s–1980s).
Why This Age? Here are the tell-tale indicators:
1. Back Structure
The backside shows:
Long, loose brocading threads.
Bright, synthetic-leaning colors (especially the blues and oranges).
Clean and even foundation yarns.
Older (pre-1920) Soumaks usually have:
More muted, vegetable-dyed colors.
Heavier patina.
Less uniformity in the ground weave.
2. Colors
The turquoise blue, orange, and peach tones suggest post-1950 aniline or chrome dyes, which didn’t appear in the region until mid-20th century.
3. Condition
The pile and foundation look too fresh for an 80–120-year-old Soumak. Age wear, oxidation, and selvage breakdown are minimal.
4. Design
The large diamond medallion with botanical repeats and animal motifs is common in mid-century reproduction Soumaks, often woven for export.
