About the Item
a late 19th century Persian Serapi rug. Finely woven with Classic medallion and border. Dark rusty brown inner ground with a brown green caramel border and dominant accents in soft and denim blue. This quality on this piece is superb.
Measures: 5'2" x 6'10"
Serapi antique carpets combine design elements borrowed from many different traditions. The bold geometric designs are probably connected to the tribal Caucasian traditions to the elegant court carpets of Tabriz to the west certainly would have influenced the Serapi carpet weavers’ understanding of balance and the central medallion format. The great majority of 19th century Serapi rugs are ennobled by a commanding, multi-lobed centre medallion flanked by four corner pieces and a nature-inspired palette of breathtaking colors. Occasionally, Serapi rugs employ large-scale all-over patterns.
