A Soumak rug is a handwoven, flat-weave textile celebrated for its distinctive patterns and remarkable craftsmanship. Originating in the Caucasus region, it is created using the traditional “Soumak” or “sumak” weaving technique, in which the weft threads are wrapped over and under the warp to form a subtly raised, textured surface. Although technically a flat weave, this method gives the rug a thicker, more dimensional feel than most other flat-woven styles.
Soumak rugs are easily recognized for their vivid color palettes, geometric forms, and well-balanced, symmetrical designs. Traditionally, artisans used natural dyes to achieve deep, earthy tones, while contemporary pieces may feature a broader spectrum of colors. Common motifs include stylized florals, medallions, diamonds, and intricate borders. With their durable construction, substantial texture, and striking visual detail, Soumak rugs serve beautifully as both functional floor coverings and decorative accents.
