About the Item
Handwoven in wool, circa 1750-1760, this rare antique kilim is specifically a flatweave of mid 18th century Bessarabian descent, featuring both medallions and an all over style with floral patterns and pictorials—one of the most rare and elegant works to ever enter these collections.
On the Design
Designers and admirers of the craft alike will particularly appreciate its size—one of the best and most versatile one can find in antique rugs of its period that lends to so many spaces today. This design features exquisite medallions and an all over pattern featuring florals and pictorials. The motif of a pictorial vignette is found in embroideries, tapestries, and carpets from earliest times; however, the naturalistic and pastoral nature of these vignettes, enclosed within a laurel wreath, finds its closest parallel in 18th century French furnishings. The birds are particularly special, as they’re unlike many other traditional depictions one would see in rugs of this period—possibly quails or similar birds of English or French sensibility. This rug is one of the most wonderful plays of folk art and aristocratic sensibility together, playing the two into a look that’s unique to every one of them, but arguably never more unique than in this masterpiece.
Condition:
This antique Bessarabian rug further enjoys good condition for its age and lineage, with exceptionally minimal wear consistent with its age—both ready for the floor and equally suitable in its size and sensibility to wall-hanging projects as well, making it a great collectible.
