About the Item

79319 Late 19th Century Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug, 04'00 x 09'01. Woven in the tribal highlands of the Caucasus during the late 19th century, this antique Kazak rug is an extraordinary textile manuscript of geometry and symbology. Its exceptional field is orchestrated around a vertical procession of octagonal gul medallions, each one a timeless emblem of tribal authority, guardianship, and unity. In the weavers’ visual language, the octagon often represents the bridging of heaven and earth—a cosmogram where the circle of the spiritual and the square of the earthly meet. These signature guls act as visual anchors, commanding strength while radiating protective energy across the indigo ground. This extraordinary masterpiece pulses with dragon motifs, their angular, latch-hooked bodies curling into forms of power, renewal, and protection. Woven alongside are Bereket symbols, which embody fertility, prosperity, and continuity of family lineage. Together, these enigmatic motifs balance martial strength with domestic blessing, echoing the dual life of nomadic tribes who sought both protection and abundance within their woven art. Along the richly patterned borders, S-hooks and Göz (eye) motifs serve as talismans, deflecting ill will and shielding the household from harm. Interlaced within the exclusive composition, one may discern quincunx arrangements—a mystical pattern of four points surrounding a center, symbolizing the balance between cosmos and human soul. Even the subtle inclusion of yin-yang-like elements reinforces the weaver’s profound awareness of duality: light and shadow, masculine and feminine, earthbound and celestial, each held in harmony within the loom’s sacred order. This cherished treasure is not merely decorative; it is a woven cosmology—a rare piece of Caucasian heritage that transcends its function to become both an heirloom and a talisman. Its scarcity, esoteric motifs, and octagonal gul medallions elevate it into a realm of exclusivity sought after by elite collectors. To own this exquisite work of art is to hold not just wool and dye, but a fragment of cultural memory, encoded with blessings and safeguarded by symbols that have endured centuries. Abrash.
