About the Item

Laila Karttunen, handwoven flatweave carpet, wool, Finland, 1930s This rare early hand-woven carpet was designed by the celebrated Finnish textile artist Laila Karttunen (1895–1981). Beyond its striking composition, the carpet is remarkable for its impressive scale, measuring 418 × 236.5 cm (164.57 × 93.11 in.), which gives it a strong visual presence. Karttunen is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Finnish textile art, playing a key role in shaping the field during the 20th century. She spent much of her life in Hämeenlinna, where she worked as a teacher and designer before becoming the artistic director of the Wetterhoff Craft School. Throughout her long career, Karttunen engaged deeply with both historical textile traditions and contemporary artistic movements. Her work gained international recognition, including a gold medal at the Milan Triennale, and she became an influential figure within Finnish applied arts. Often describing her creative process with the words “yarn is my paint,” Karttunen approached textiles with the mindset of a modern artist. This carpet reflects her distinctive language, combining geometric abstraction with influences drawn from both modernism and Nordic folk art. The rhythmic interplay of lines and shapes suggests Bauhaus ideals, while the subdued, earthy color palette remains rooted in Scandinavian textile heritage, making this piece an important and highly accomplished example of Nordic craftsmanship.
