Handwoven in a wool flatweave, this 3x5 Scandinavian flat weave rug is from a particular line of our Scandinavian flatweaves called Smart Loom, known for its intricacy and an interesting contemporary approach to gradation with geometric patterns.
On the Design:
This new flat weave reinvents vintage Scandinavian Kilim in ways that both honor the Swedish minimalist aesthetic and modernize its construction. Our use of undyed natural yarns, for example, lends a subtle striae with more of a sense of movement and depth—a nod to Rollakan techniques in a modern fashion. This subtle intricacy both brings out the movement and pays homage to a traditional Scandinavian weaving technique alike. Here, a play of light gray and blue stripes underscores the concept at work, where the sense of movement born of subtle size and scale variations creates that gradient in the pattern—a fabulous and bold idea that still sits comfortable in a variety of spaces keeping up with the “Swedish Minimalism” foundation of this aesthetic in its earliest days. Connoisseurs may admire this proprietary technique of ours that both innovates and honors mid-century weaving techniques inherent to Scandinavian style.
Our flatweave’s more durable, weighted body is also a hallmark of the collection, made for high-traffic and heavy-furniture spaces. This, alongside several elements detailed here, represent R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s hope to honor this mid-century modern aesthetic. His Scandinavian Collection is a contribution to that style, and a renaissance for its designs with more comfortable, current techniques.
