ABOUT SWEDISH RYA RUGS
Rya rugs were often displayed in homes as wedding mementos and passed down through generations as family heirlooms. These traditional Scandinavian wool rugs feature a long pile and are crafted using the Ghiordes knot to create double-sided fabric. Originally used by 15th-century mariners as bed covers, ryas gradually became lighter and more colorful. Offering excellent insulation, they are made from knotted wool, creating rich textures. By the 17th century, ryas became decorative and were often used in weddings. In the 1970s, they gained popularity in the U.S. for their warmth during the oil crisis. Swedish rya rugs are known for their vibrant colors, thick shaggy piles, and durability, making them chic and long-lasting.
