About the Item

This extraordinary mid-to-late 19th century Turkish Anatolian village rug is a rare and visually captivating example of classical village weaving at its highest artistic level. Handwoven in western Anatolia in the mid to third quarter of the 1800s, this rug is composed in the traditional prayer-format layout, lending both spiritual symbolism and architectural elegance to the design. Celebrated for its unusually rich and harmonious color palette, this piece stands apart even among fine Anatolian rugs. A glowing brilliant red field forms the foundation of the composition, while luminous shades of green and blue—achieved through the use of natural vegetable dyes on hand-spun fine wool—float across the surface with remarkable clarity and depth. Over more than a century, these organic pigments have aged into soft, layered tonalities, producing a refined abrash that gives the rug a painterly, almost jewel-like presence. Adding to its distinction, this Anatolian rug originates from the private collection of a renowned San Francisco vintage rug connoisseur, reinforcing its authenticity, quality, and collector-grade provenance.
