About the Item

Kirshehir is a town in central Anatolia located between Kayseri and Ankara. The rugs woven there utilize excellent quality wool and often feature vibrant colors such as a distinctive purplish red naturally sourced from cochineal. The designs can vary between bold and vibrant to European-influenced floral patterns. This rug is woven in a prayer design with a large floral element beneath a stepped arch and indigo spandrels. This is framed by a Cubukli border flanked by celadon meandering vine guard borders. A prayer rug is placed between the ground and the worshipper for cleanliness during the various positions of Islamic prayer. When praying, a niche, representing the mihrab of a mosque, located at the top of the field of the rug, must be pointed to the Islamic center for prayer, Mecca. 6' 4" x 4' 3"
