Kilim’s collection of important classics—a particularly unique find among works of a celebrated weaving tradition, made with hand-knotted wool in Turkey circa 1920-1930.
On the Design:
This magnificent antique Oushak rug exemplifies the distinctive design language that established West Anatolia as a premier weaving center for grand decorative carpets. The design presents a bold medallion format with exceptional color relationships—most notably the commanding carnelian-red central medallion set against an ivory field, creating a dramatic focal point that anchors the entire design. The central medallion features a sophisticated nested structure with a cobalt-blue inner field adorned with precisely rendered floral motifs surrounding a delicate ivory center. This medallion's scalloped contour demonstrates the refined drawing characteristic of superior Oushak workshops, with perfectly executed symmetry along both vertical and horizontal axes.
The ivory field surrounding the medallion displays a remarkable sense of spaciousness, adorned with delicate floral sprays that provide visual counterpoint to the bold central element without competing with it. This balanced relationship between dominant medallion and restrained field is a hallmark of classical Oushak design sensibility.
