This antique Turkish Yuruk runner features an exciting, Traditional Design. Runner rugs such as this Fine piece are valued by collectors and admirers of antique Oriental rugs for their cultural authenticity, and their inherent uniqueness. In contrast to the more sophisticated, cosmopolitan city rugs, which are characterized by a rigid symmetry and a precise execution, tribal rugs such as this exemplary Yuruk are woven in a very traditional manner, utilizing local materials for the wool and the dye. Further, the designs of such pieces are much more subject to the weaver’s interpretation, and often feature figures that give the impression of a free treatment of form. The beautiful, repeating geometric figures that pepper the field and the border of this particular piece are exemplary of this tendency: for while a keenness of handiwork is readily apparent, the slightly asymmetric leanings of the figures is equally clear, suggesting an intentional aesthetic decision.
