About the Item
This antique, circa 1880, Ghordes rug has an ivory field with an overall design of angular caramel-brown, terracotta-red and mole-brown palmettes and angular serrated leaf vine, in a broad mole-brown border of polychrome palmettes alternating with floral sprays and linked by angular serrated leaf vine between ivory and terracotta-red floral and ribbon-vine stripes, inner skittle-pattern and plain outer sandy-yellow stripes.
Antique Ghiordes rugs, woven in the town of Gördes in western Anatolia, are prized for their fine craftsmanship, balanced designs, and exceptional use of color. Traditionally produced from the 18th to early 20th centuries, they are known for their soft wool, durable symmetrical (Turkish) knots, and rich palettes featuring warm reds, deep blues, and soft ivory tones. Many display intricately patterned prayer niches, floral motifs, or geometric medallions framed by multiple borders.
