About the Item

Large Ottoman Silkwork Textile with Botanical Embroidery, Circa 1880 This magnificent, large-scale Ottoman silkwork textile is a superb example of late 19th-century embroidery. The piece depicts a rich and symbolic scene: the garden setting of paradise (jannah) as described in the Qur'an. The composition is centered on an arched gateway—a representation of the gate to Paradise—flanked by decorative columns. Within this sacred arch, a large vase overflows with meticulously rendered carnations, a flower often associated with divine beauty and a popular motif in Ottoman art. The entire work is a tapestry of naturalistic and stylized floral motifs, a visual representation of a heavenly garden. Historical Context Textiles and embroidery held a central place in the art and culture of the Ottoman Empire. For centuries, they were a primary medium for artistic expression, used to decorate palaces, mosques, and homes, and to signify wealth, status, and piety. Ottoman embroidery, often executed by skilled artisans, was renowned for its intricate detail and lavish use of materials, including silk and precious metal threads. This particular textile is heavily embroidered with gold threads on a lustrous beige satin silk background, a combination that speaks to the opulence of the late Ottoman period. The "Garden of Paradise" was a profound and recurring theme in Islamic art across the centuries, symbolizing spiritual abundance and the promise of a blessed afterlife. These textiles served not only as decorative items but also as spiritual and contemplative pieces, bringing a vision of heaven into the domestic sphere. The botanical motifs, from the carnations to the scattered leaves and flowers, are not mere decoration; they carry deep symbolic meaning rooted in Islamic tradition. The conservation of this textile, which involved using scientific methods to stabilize the fragile silk and support the heavy gold embroidery, highlights both the immense value of such works and the challenges of preserving them. The process, which is fully reversible, ensures that this historical and artistic treasure can continue to be admired for generations to come, allowing us to connect with a powerful tradition of faith and beauty expressed through the medium of cloth. Dimensions: 102 1/2 inches x 72 inches wide. The fringe adds an extra 2 inches on each side. (Ref: NY5706-nlrr)
