Beautiful contemporary Moroccan style runner rug, hand knotted wool with a blue field, ivory accents in a gorgeous all-over tribal design. This rug measures: 3'2" x 14".

:: Triple column nuanced floral top views and pomegranate stylized minor medallions in a partial Veramin design motif. Wrapped by main border in sharp serrated leaves, minor germinating trefoil plants, and floral blossoms throughout. Phenomenal nuanced carpet with artistic merit found throughout in an early example not intended for export markets in the last quarter of the 19th century. All shades in gem tones of red and blue and earthen shades are all quite vivid and naturally derived. Colors and shades include: Brick red, cherry red, charcoal, chocolate brown, dusty rose pink, sapphire blue, ruby red, pale saffron yellow, burgundy wine red, copper, and more. Condition notes: Areas of pile, knot heads and foundation. Most of the original side cord selvages are intact or restored. Fully secured sides and ends. Some coarse hand overwrapped selvages. Several localized areas, approximately three by five inches to five by five inches of possible touch-ups and markering, mostly found within the dark border field, otherwise etched from mordants and dyes over time. Minor contouring consistent with rugs this type and age that are woven on a wooden loom with some areas of the width 3'7" compared to cited 3'10" within normal margins. Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years.
