This rare Transylvanian rug is a historical treasure, part of a unique group of Anatolian carpets preserved in Transylvanian churches and castles. Recognized for their hybrid Ottoman-Christian aesthetics, these rugs were often commissioned by Saxon communities in Eastern Europe during the height of the Ottoman textile trade. The composition centers on a tripartite architectural mihrab (niche) design, supported by stylized columns, an iconic motif symbolizing both prayer and power. The deep indigo-blue field evokes spiritual depth, while the intricate floral spandrels and pointed arches create a stunning vertical rhythm. The red and ivory border is packed with sinuous palmettes, saz leaves, and vine scrolls, reminiscent of Safavid courtly designs but tailored to European tastes of the 17th century.
