Made with hand-knotted wool in Turkey circa 1950-1960, this 7x10 vintage rug is an exciting new mid-century curation from Rug
Kilim’s collection of rare classics—full of unexpected, bright colors and rare pictorial motifs like few in its period.
On the Design:
The design bears a strong resemblance to Ersari rugs—one of the largest Turkmen tribes, known to favor these and similar medallion patterns and chest-like motifs (often associated with the look of the Bokhara).
Here, bright green and beige-brown tones underscore the field and border, where geometric patterns in a play of all over and medallion style enjoy vibrant tangerine red and sky blue tones. Among its more subtle beauties, keen eyes and admirers of the craft will note tribal representations of birds in a surprising abundance, both for depictions of this animal and for any rug. Few works of nomadic tribal folk art and weaving alike can boast the number, let alone the relative quality, of motifs like these, and they lend a touch of brightness and personal, intricate beauty to the design in every way.
