This Arts
Crafts Donegal carpet is a highly collectible textile, known as "The Rose" design, created by the influential British architect and designer C.F.A. Voysey (1857-1941) for Alexander Morton
Co., and woven in the famed Killybegs workshops in Donegal, Ireland.
First produced as a textile and then adapted into a carpet pattern, the design embodies Voysey's signature Arts
Crafts aesthetic. The field features a striking, stylized rose trellis pattern, utilizing flat, two-dimensional motifs that were praised for their "repose and breadth" in contrast to the more elaborate Victorian styles. The design is characterized by large, full-headed roses and trailing leafy stems in a symmetrical, repeating framework.
The color palette is both vibrant and refined, with the image showcasing a warm terracotta or burnished orange field as a backdrop to the sage green leaves, golden yellow accents, and cream details. This considered use of natural, vegetable dyes results in subtle color variations and a rich patina that ages gracefully. The composition is beautifully framed by a wide border featuring a continuous garland of the same rose motifs, enhancing the rhythmic quality of the design.
In line with the Arts
Crafts movement's philosophy of valuing handcraft over industrial excess, these carpets were hand-knotted by local women on vertical looms using high-quality, local wool. The coarse weave and thick, dense pile contribute to the rug's exceptional durability and textural appeal, a testament to the quality of Donegal production.
