Made with hand-knotted wool and believed to originate from England in the late 19th century, this 11x12 antique Axminster rug marks an exceptional curation in Rug
Kilim’s European Collection of his acclaimed style.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may recognize this Axminster as an exemplar of the style, particularly in its marriage of varied influences—particularly the European approach to Oriental patterns that would become one of the defining traits of this weaving tradition and a subtle influence to other grand works in the Arts and Crafts movement. The particular use of a minimalist approach to Voysey-esque floral patterns in the navy blue border speaks to the latter, while the field is more of a celebration of the architectural floral trellises and almost medallion-style geometry collectors might see in Persian Sultanabad rugs and Turkish Oushak rugs (two venerated styles known in particular for their influence to some of the most sought-after Axminster rugs). The field features a radiant madder red ground, which provides a dramatic and clean stage for a mesmeric, all-over lattice of geometric diamond motifs. Each diamond is filled with finely detailed tribal icons in contrasting shades of cream, navy, and soft sage, creating a rhythmic "gradiance" that draws the eye into the depths of the intricate design. Keen eyes for detail will further admire both the distinct, almost scale-like texture of the Axminster weaving style at play in this piece, along with the subtly sheen, high-quality wool that both sits beautifully in any light and draws the eye to naturally admire its many rich details and impressive variety of colors.
