Decorate a living room or dining area with this exquisite antique Aubusson rug, handwoven in the city of Aubusson, France, circa 1870. Measuring over 13 by 10 feet, this exceptional flat-woven tapestry carpet exemplifies the refined artistry and craftsmanship for which the Aubusson workshops have been celebrated since the 18th century.
The composition features a harmonious Rococo-inspired design with a large central floral medallion surrounded by scrolling acanthus leaves and blossoms. The corners each display oval reserves with bouquets of roses and peonies framed by intricate arabesque borders. The palette is elegantly balanced, combining soft shades of beige, celadon green, terracotta, and gold, punctuated by deeper accents of crimson and black that frame the entire piece.
Executed in the traditional flat-weave technique, this Aubusson carpet retains its original thick canvas backing for added stability. Its floral pattern and sweeping cartouches recall the grandeur of the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods, when Aubusson designs graced the salons of French nobility and royal residences.
This magnificent example remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with rich coloration and fine detailing throughout. A true statement of timeless French refinement, this antique tapestry rug would bring warmth, texture, and history to any interior setting.
