About the Item
Handwoven in wool and hailing from France circa 1890-1900, this 17x19 antique Aubusson flatweave rug in gray features transitional French designs and Persian rug sensibilities of the Bidjar tradition. Its design is symbolic of the inspiration Oriental rugs had on many European weaving styles.
On the design:
Uniquely inspired by Oriental rugs, this turn-of-the-century oversized rug exemplifies the unique cultural exchange between European and Oriental weaving styles that inspired masterpieces like this in its period. Keen eyes will admire the variety of hues, as well as the more dramatic, almost industrial tones in this rug’s accents that are unlike many other Aubussons. The subtlety of its brighter, more whimsical hues against the gray and midnight blue is so dramatic for this style—a fabulous play with the natural gravity of a regal medallion style. It’s an elegant choice, and rare among the finest rugs of this provenance.
Condition: This antique Aubusson rug style flatweave further enjoys good condition for its age and origin. It may be used on the floor, and is ideal for wall-hanging projects, too.
