Handwoven in wool, this 7x10 antique Bessarabian kilim rug is believed to originate from mid-19th-century Romania. Its design favors rich brown tones, with elaborate floral patterns and cartouches in a large scale.
On the design:
Admirers may note an inspiration from French Aubussons in this European flatweave—particularly in its elegant sensibility and fine detail. There are especially present wine red and green accents beside the chocolate tones around the beige field and border—a rich palette with an air of country chic in its sensibilities. Romanian Kilims like these are among some of the most collectible today, and this is an exemplary find therein.
