About the Item

William Morris was the leader of the Arts Crafts movement in England in the late 19th century. Their mission questioned industrial progress and promoted craftsmanship and expressionism through the skill of our hands using traditional materials. Morris blended oriental designs found in Turkish Oushak carpets, which were popular across Europe at that time, with gothic style, creating a flat treatment and distribution of leaves and flowers into geometric forms. Alexander Morton Company was a Scottish textile manufacturer founded in 1875, producing Arts Crafts style textiles. They were approached by the Congested Districts Board for Ireland in 1891 to set up carpet production at Killybegs, County Donegal, in western Ireland. They offered to provide affordable labor, subsidize the construction of factory buildings, and a deep-water shipping port. Carpet production began in 1898, creating Donegal “Turkey” carpets in the Oushak style. This carpet has a unique, large-scale interpretation of the boteh pattern on a blue-green field. 14' 5" x 11' 8".
